    Description

From the Tucson estate of a vet is this fairly well preserved  WW2 United States Army Air Force C-1 Sustenance / Survival Vest with a wartime contract label, the exact type used by B-29 crews in the Pacific Theater. I'm pretty sure that's where this one saw the elephant. The vest has a pistol holster sewn to the side fitted with a leather retaining strap.  There are herringbone cloth ties for adjusting personal size and securing the back - these have some sort of old stiffening coated on the tips (I assume applied by the flier who wore it) to reduce fraying of the ends during those long range missions over Japan. There is a clear Army Air Forces insignia  printed in color - another printed in black on inside. There are numerous pockets with snap closures and indications for potential contents both in and out - the snaps are imprinted "GRIPPER". A typical wartime gold on black embroidered contract label with "VEST EMERGENCY SUSTENANCE / TYPE C-1 / SPECIFICATION NO. 3206 / ORDER NO. W33-038 AC-6639 / BRESLEE MFG. CO. / PROPERTY / AIR FORCES, U.S. ARMY" is sewn within. I believe these were designed as one size fits all. Condition is quite good though not absolutely pristine perfect, with an aura of time and long storage. The OD color is slightly sun faded from period mission usage, though not overly so - in fact, it is actually a bit stronger than apparent in my photos. There are indications a pistol once resided in the holster, so we can be sure this one did not simply hug some shelf in a box here at Davis-Monthan Air Field for the duration. The circular leather escutcheon has some threads missing. There are two or three very small pinholes and other typical signs of service - the usual though in this case minor salty sweat stains to the interior and hints of service related soil complete the picture,  contributing to a charismatic been there (but didn't get worn out) look. I'm attempting to nitpick for the obsessive, and a look at the pics should give a good idea of appearance and condition.  If you require mint never issued, this is not the one - if you want one that saw that elephant (almost certainly more than once) and didn't get stepped on too badly while doing so,  this should do nicely.
