Antique Iconic Dark Lantern with Glass Len a Movable Shutter Multi Color

Description

This is a Small Dark Lantern most likely from the early 1890's, it has a Single Wick.
The overall measurements are:   5-1/2" Tall and 4" wide from extended handle to glass dome,
2-1/2" in circumference

Dark lanterns aka Police Lanterns or Bullseye Lanterns, were used by police forces in both America and in England.  These types of lanterns were also used in the
American
Civil War and are mentioned in history books.
The shutter and top are one piece, the top can be fully rotated allowing the light to appear to be
extinguished/blocked or it can
be clear, red or green.  This is a rare piece as few are found with the glass and dome intact. I used a votive candle to show the various examples of how the light glows. The well for oil is unharmed as well as the wick that i believe has never been used.  The
lantern
was made of sheet steel or sheet iron and plated with tin.  The paint is in the process of
deteriorating although there are areas of the original finish of "japanning" a lacquer made from tar and baked to a shiny black finish is revealed.
