1905 RARE USA OPTOMETRY TRIAL LENS SET WITH 175 SMALL RARE LENSES 30 mm or 1 ¼”
I think it was made by The American Optical Company, (AO), because they are the only optical company that I know of who made these much smaller lenses for their trail lens sets. From what I read on a 1912 AO Catalog, they made a Wallet Trail Lens Set using these smaller lenses measuring 30 mm wide & tall. There could be other optical companies out there who also had made small lenses like these, but I don’t know who they are.
WHY RARE
: This trail lens set has become very rare and hard to find because it was made with a lot smaller lenses than usual. Each lens in this set measures 30 mm compared to the normal size 35 mm universal lens. If you are trying to restore your tail lens set that has these smaller lenses, then you know how hard and difficult it is to find these in today global market. Today most of the trail lens set lenses has become universal in terms of same size, shape and style with the exception of the much older model which have different shapes and styles but again it has the universal size 35 mm lens. A normal size universal lens measures 35 mm or 1 3/8 inches wide and 35 mm or 1 3/8 inches tall. These lenses looks exactly like the universal lens that has the same exact shape and style, but these were made much, much smaller than usual. This set contain 175 lenses that measures 30 mm or 1 ¼ inches wide and 30 mm or 1 ¼ inches tall.
CONDITION
: All these lenses are original with this set. The lens tray and lenses are in remarkable condition for it age, and as far as I know it has three or maybe four lenses that are semi-damage, but still very functional. As you can see from these pictures, there are some missing lenses and missing carrying case.
SET COMPATIBILY
: Compatible to early 1900’s American Optical Company Wallet Trail Lens Sets. If you ever owned one of these wallet sets before, then you most likely you have a couple broken lenses mixed in with your set and as you know they are very difficult to find and replace
LENS TRAY
: Lens tray is made of Oak hardwood, measures 19 in w x 1.50 in D x 11.25 in H, divided into 5 compartments for different classes of lens with two storage compartments. The tray has beautiful burgundy velvet lining for appearance and for lens protection. As you can see, the tray is still in remarkable condition for it age.
LENS TYPE
: This trial lens set consists of “convexes” and “concaves”. The lenses are biconvex and biconcave in design. Each lens are etched with focal strength on the thumb grip.
LENS TRAY DESCRIPTION
: The tray compartment consist of spherical and cylindrical lenses in biconvex and biconcave lens and auxiliary lenses form in silver color metal rims with thumb grip handles engraved with power ranging in from 0.12 D to 20 D, positive and negative cylindrical lenses ranging in power from 0.12 D to 5.50 D, trial prism lenses from one prism dioptre to 10 prism dioptres, missing the number three prism diopters and it only has two auxiliary lenses. The lens powers are marked in dioptres.
